Only three weeks until the market opens May 6! We can’t wait to greet our vendors and get farm-fresh produce, meats, eggs, honey, and local fish, baked goods, and coffee and doughnuts. One of the factors that has enabled our farmers to grow produce later in the fall and earlier in the spring (and sometimes all winter) is the federal grant program that has reimbursed them for building high tunnels. These unheated greenhouses take in the sun’s heat and light, while keeping out wind and snow, letting crops take root and flourish for a longer period than they would out in the fields. Blue Skys Farm has added their third high tunnel; farmer Christina, her workers and dedicated volunteers put the plastic covering on this week, and it’s ready to be planted. Hurray for this sustainable, energy-efficient boost to our local food supply!
On June 3, Goodwill Industries will be visiting the market to collect your electronic waste. They will also accept other items for resale or recycling, such as clothing. A full list of items will be published before the date. (A reminder that the clothing you donate doesn’t have to be wearable; even stained or torn clothes are fine as long as they are clean. They will be recycled for rags, insulation and other purposes.)
The weather has been glorious, and whether you observe Passover, Easter, or just the arrival of birds and flowers, we hope you are able to take the time to enjoy the outdoors this weekend with family and friends.
See you at a market.
