This Independence Day, show your true red-white-and-blue by purchasing American-grown food for your feasts. Go further down the path to Old Glory by buying only food which is genetically free of patents by multinational corporations or imported fish DNA. Become a real flag-waver by demanding food that doesn’t have a huge carbon footprint due to long-distance trucking and the need to be refrigerated for weeks before it reaches your grocery shelves. Stand up for your right to safe, healthful and sustainable agriculture that employs American farmers and farm workers without poisoning them or the land. Step up and get your local food from your local farmer at our market, from a farmstand or CSA, or from a grocery store that regularly sells local produce. Only you can make real farming in America a viable career and source of the safe food we all need.
You can also help keep farms in Rhode Island growing food, not dollars for corporations; please contact your state senator and representatives about House Bill 6172 Sub A. This bill would give “farms” the right to hold events such as concerts and weddings without having to get permits from the local authorities. No farmers were included in proposing or drafting this unnecessary act, which would damage relations between farmers and their neighbors, and give more incentives to those who would take viable farmland and use it for frivolous and even destructive purposes. Please take a moment to call your legislators and let them know you oppose this bill.
See you at the market.
